Windows, tabs and Focus Mode

Several windows and tabs, the sidebar and toolbar, Focus Mode and Full Screen.

Windows and tabs

Each documentation folder opens in its own window. Open as many as you like:

  • File ▸ New Tab (⌘T) and New Window (⌥⌘N) open the current page again, in the same view.
  • ⌘-click a page in the sidebar or a link to open it in a new tab, ⌥-click for a new window.
  • Show Next Tab / Show Previous Tab: ⌃⇥ / ⌃⇧⇥.

Each tab keeps its own page, view and Back/Forward history. When you quit and open Kirbon again, your windows and tabs come back with their pages, views, side-by-side layout, sidebar width and expanded rows, Page Info and window positions. History, Read Only and Focus Mode start fresh, and a window whose folder can’t be found isn’t reopened (the folder stays in Recent, marked as missing). To open Kirbon on the Welcome window instead, choose Settings ▸ General ▸ When Kirbon opens ▸ Show the Welcome window.

Switch between documentation

The name at the top of the sidebar is a menu of your recent documentation folders and Open Folder…. Choosing a documentation that is already open brings its window forward instead of opening another one.

The toolbar shows, from left to right: Back and Forward, the page title with its status, the formatting controls (in Visual), the Visual · Markdown · Preview control, the side-by-side and inspector buttons, the More (⋯) menu with Read Only and Focus Mode, and Search.

Page InfoView ▸ Show Page Info ⌥⌘I

View ▸ Customize Toolbar… lets you remove, move and add back any toolbar item, including the formatting group and the view control. In windows narrower than about 1 100 points the toolbar gets compact — the views become icons and formatting folds into Aa ▾ and Insert ▾ — and when space runs out, items move into More; Back, Forward, the title and the views always stay. If opening Page Info would make the page too narrow, the sidebar steps aside until Page Info closes. Windows can be as small as 900 × 600.

Focus Mode

View ▸ Enter Focus Mode (⇧⌘↩) clears away the sidebar, the inspector and the formatting controls, leaving just the page. Leave it with the same shortcut or Exit Focus — everything comes back the way it was.

Focus Mode: just the page.

In Focus Mode, an outline button shows the page’s Outline in a popover. Focus Mode is separate from Full Screen (⌃⌘F): use either one, or both together. Esc leaves neither.

Read Only

View ▸ Read Only (or More ▸ Read Only) locks one page in one window: the status says Read Only with a lock, the formatting controls are dimmed, and Allow Editing unlocks it. Other pages and other windows stay editable.

Appearance and accessibility

Kirbon follows the Mac:

  • Light and Dark appearance, your accent colour and the Liquid Glass setting. Choose a fixed appearance in Settings ▸ General if you like.
  • Increase Contrast, Reduce Transparency and Reduce Motion in System Settings ▸ Accessibility.
  • VoiceOver: the sidebar exposes levels and expanded state, headings have levels for the rotor, tables expose rows and headers, tasks are checkboxes, images use their alt text, and save problems are announced.
  • Full Keyboard Access: ⇥ moves from the sidebar to the toolbar, the page and Page Info. Every control that appears on hover also has a menu or a key.
